Interviewing a Caterer
By Rachel Berns

Sisters-in-law Audrey and Christi Berns enjoy cooking meals for their families. Since they are next-door neighbors as well, they often share meals in each others homes. The fact that they both enjoy cooking, and wanted their children to learn to serve others while learning entrepreneurial skills, prompted them to start their own catering business. They decided to call their business, “Farmgirl Foods”. The title seemed fitting since they are both the wives of farmers.
Audrey and Christi’s first big event was the 2002 Bladen Alumni Banquet. Audrey describes it as their first “big break”. They have done several alumni banquets, as well as anniversaries, birthdays, business appreciation dinners, and Christmas dinners, not to mention the various auctions they have served. Their business features homemade dinner rolls, and home cooked food, not just pre-packaged foods and desserts. Also, you can buy dinner rolls or cinnamon rolls by special order.
Farmgirl Foods normally uses church kitchens, or school kitchens to prepare the food for the meals they cater, as they do not have a licensed kitchen in their home. This allows them to abide by state regulations.
Both Audrey and Christi say that they especially enjoy events such as anniversaries and birthday meals, so they can really serve others in their community.
They have a website featuring various recipes such as salads, cookies, and breads (www.farmgirlfoods.com).
Having a home based business leaves them flexible for their families and other activities, says Audrey and Christi Berns. They love being with their families every day, and serving others while they’re at it.
My mom (Audrey) and my aunt (Christi), have a great business going for them. I love helping to cater, and dressing professionally. Oh, yeah – I like the tips, too.
